چکیده

Hippocampal theta and gamma rhythms often occur together. While gamma activity is supposed to be generated intrahippocampally, the source of theta oscillations is still debated. Here, a network model of hippocampal inhibitory interneurons was capable of generating the gamma rhythm when responding to constant excitation. Adding a periodic term to this stimulation resulted in complex pattern generation of the network, also including a theta frequency periodicity in the time dependent network coherence measure. A pyramidal cell model driven by the output of this network proved that membrane potential oscillations in the theta range can be entrained by this intrahippocampal mechanism. 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. Hippocampal theta rhythm and its coupling with gamma oscillations require fast inhibition onto parvalbumin-positive interneurons.

Hippocampal theta (5-10 Hz) and gamma (35-85 Hz) oscillations depend on an inhibitory network of GABAergic interneurons. However, the lack of methods for direct and cell-type-specific interference with inhibition has prevented better insights that help link synaptic and cellular properties with network function. Here, we generated genetically modified mice (PV-Deltagamma(2)) in which synaptic i...

Interneuronal mechanisms of hippocampal theta oscillations in a full-scale model of the rodent CA1 circuit

The hippocampal theta rhythm plays important roles in information processing; however, the mechanisms of its generation are not well understood. We developed a data-driven, supercomputer-based, full-scale (1:1) model of the rodent CA1 area and studied its interneurons during theta oscillations. Theta rhythm with phase-locked gamma oscillations and phase-preferential discharges of distinct inter...

Networks of interneurons with fast and slow gamma-aminobutyric acid type A (GABAA) kinetics provide substrate for mixed gamma-theta rhythm.

During active exploration, hippocampal neurons exhibit nested rhythmic activity at theta ( approximately 8 Hz) and gamma ( approximately 40 Hz) frequencies. Gamma rhythms may be generated locally by interactions within a class of interneurons mediating fast GABA(A) (GABA(A,fast)) inhibitory postsynaptic currents (IPSCs), whereas theta rhythms traditionally are thought to be imposed extrinsicall...

Glutamatergic synaptic transmission participates in generating the hippocampal EEG.

The participation of ionotropic glutamatergic synapses in the generation of hippocampal electroencephalography (EEG) of behaving rats has not been systematically studied. In this study, field potentials in hippocampal CA1 were recorded following injection of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) and alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid (AMPA) receptor antagonists, or vehicle control, ...
